In an interview with Nills Campbell of the Stabroek News, Unity Party's chairman, Cheddi Jagan, Jr. reiterated his commitment to lead the Unity Party to victory in 2006. The April 2005 interview has put to rest any speculation or rumor of a short term commitment by Unity Party's chairman and leader.

Dr Cheddi Jagan, Jr. founded the Unity Party to re-introduce coalition governance, which was extremely successful in Guyana during the early 1950's. As a strong proponent in the strength of individual initiative and free enterprise, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, Jr. emphasized Unity Party's dedication to growing Guyana's economy through the efficient private sector.

Dr Cheddi Jagan, Jr. also outlined his coalition's intention to lower taxes, promoting Guyana's products, services and eco-tourism with the establishment of a Ministry of Marketing, rapid expansion of the agriculture sector, border security, law enforcement, and youth development. Long term issues such as coastal flooding and rebuilding a sincere and mutually beneficial relationship with the United States of America were also discussed with the Stabroek News.

His experience of being born into a prominent political family has helped Dr. Cheddi Jagan, Jr. to recognize and accept the reality of a long and demanding political campaign. As a realist, Unity Party's leader also anticipates a "dirty tricks" campaign by the PPP and is fully prepared to respond. In his listening tour across Guyana, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, Jr. remarked on his empathy for the people who are facing countless problems, but forgotten by the PPP until the elections neared.
