Dr. Cheddi Jagan, Jr.
A SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF DR. CHEDDI B. JAGAN, JR.
  -CHAIRMAN OF UNITY PARTY

Unity Party’s leader, Cheddi (Joey) Jagan was born on October 14, 1949, in the same period of gestation of the People’s Progressive Party (founded 1950) by his late father, President Cheddi.

Joey attended Commenius Moravian Primary School in Queenstown, Georgetown, and then graduated from Queen’s College High School in 1966. During this period, the politics of Guyana and the fortunes of President Cheddi was like life on a roller coaster, and in many ways Joey was along for the ride.

In 1967-68, Joey attended the Sir. George Williams University in Montreal, Canada, where after a year he became involved in a struggle for justice and fair-play at that campus which led to his arrest and trial (along with 92 others) and eventually to the dismissal of all charges. However, the Sir. George Williams’s affair impacted widely in the West Indies and Guyana to the extent that there were demonstrations in Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad demanding justice and offering support to the students who were put on trial. However withthat incident behind him, Cheddi Jr. continued his studies at the University of California at Riverside in 1971 and graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science (high honors) at which time he was admitted to Howard University - College of Dentistry, where he graduated as a dentist in 1978. After a brief stint in the United States Air Force (USAF), Dr. Jagan then moved to New York where he practiced dentistry until remigrating to Guyana in 1993. Since then, Joey has been practicing dentistry at his office on Charlotte Street in Georgetown and also in the New York area. Joey holds current dental licenses in New York, Maryland, Texas, and Guyana. In the 1997 general elections, Joey was elected to parliament but after sitting in parliament for less than a year, he resigned his parliamentary seat while at the same time resigning from the People’s Progressive Party. His reasons for resignation were well documented in the press at that time and copies of all references to his situation can be found in this website. Since that time, Joey has consistently exposed and talked out against the stagnating political conditions affecting our country, and he has now, along with others, formed Unity Party.
